About Me

Bothell, WA, United States
Welcome to my Blog! I am a student teacher in the K-8 Tcert program at the University of Wasington Bothell Campus. While I am very excited and enthusiastic to get into the classroom, I cycle through stages of fear and doubt, sometimes feeling confident, sometimes feeling inadequate. I hope my role as a teacher allows me to create a classroom that builds interesting, creative, curriculum that is fun and relevant. I hope I can create a classroom community that nurtures students and gets them interested in school. I hope I can cultivate caring, trusting, relationships with my students’ that encourages the creation of knowledge. I worry I will not know how to build these important connections with my students.

Algebra Tiles & Manipulatives

Algebra tiles are a fabulouse tool and I wonder if I had seen them when I was a freshman in high school if I would have passed algebra. I took algebra from Mr. Dawkins in 1978 he was fast and furious with his explanantions of x and y and how to solve fgor them. Actually I dont remember knowing that was what I was supposed to be doing! I was lost on day 1. I can still see him with his chalk and that chalk board. I remember thinking I have never seen anyone write on a chalk board so fast! He would throw a problem up on that board and fly through it chalk dust just a flying. I got left behind very early on in this class and finally in 2006 I learned an x was a symbol for an un know interger!

I think it  is so cool we are already teaching our 5th graders algebra concepts right now. We are not calling it that but we are teaching it.  my fifth grade students are learning to write and solve equations and they are learning to use x for unknow integers in their equations. I think this will make algebra much easier as they move through school. Having some experience with this and seeing it before they have all the pressure of highschool.

I never would have thought of using red and white beans as a manipulative what a cheap cool easy way to provide counters for kids! Poker chips that's perfect! Some kids learn better when they touch things. Today we have so many ways to provide manipulative's to our students and to tell you the truth only after suing fraction bars and learning how to draw that fraction table thingy did I really understand how fractions work. I love love love manipulative's I am totally one of those people that needs  to touch the math and work out the math and having manipulative's to do it with is very beneficial for me.

Virtual Manipulative's are great and can be an excellent tool for students to practice the concepts and ideas they are learning about in the class room. I can see how it would be important to allow time for each kid on a computer to drive. I know when I am a passenger tend daydream or sleep.

My biggest question about manipulative's is how long do you let students work with manipulative's before you move them to the traditional algorithm?
